Help dogs from around the world get a second chance at life in Canada!

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently announced measures prohibiting the entry of dogs from over 100 countries in order to prevent the spread of rabies. While preventing the spread of rabies is critical, this draconian policy is unnecessary because alternative measures could have been adopted, which would have allowed the rescue of dogs in truly desperate situations around the world without compromising public safety.

Moreover, there is no exemption in the Canadian regulations that would allow the import of dogs from conflict zones or in the event of natural disasters. This ban would leave dogs in terrible situations instead of giving them a second chance at life in Canada. Urge the CFIA to quickly remedy this oversight and adopt exemptions to the current measures for animal rescue missions and humanitarian efforts!

Dear Dr. Mithani and Minister Bibeau, 

I would like to express some concerns with respect to the new measure prohibiting the entry of dogs from more than 100 countries around the world.

I understand the role of the CFIA to ensure the safety of Canadians and their pets and some benefits to strengthening current regulations concerning animal import. However, I strongly believe that completely banning the import of dogs from over 100 countries is not an appropriate solution and that this policy would have disastrous consequences for countless dogs in need around the world. Other measures to ensure public safety such as adequate vaccination, testing and quarantine prior to the import have been proven to be effective. Such alternatives would allow rescue organizations to continue to help dogs in these countries and give them a second chance at life here in Canada.

These new measures are devastating to both animals and humans alike, especially with the humanitarian crisis happening now in Ukraine and others to come in countries affected by natural disasters or armed conflicts. The absence—at a bare minimum—of a mechanism for exemptions for humanitarian missions or situations of crisis will lead to needless suffering all over the world. 

I encourage you to amend the new measure in order to incorporate these important exemptions that would benefit everyone, including dogs, from around the world.
