Ban fur farming across Canada

Every year, more than two million animals—mostly minks and foxes—are confined in tiny cages on factory fur farms in Canada, living in misery. The animals are then killed for their fur, which is sold to the fashion industry.

Kept in small enclosures, often without adequate access to food, water and veterinary medical care, these wild animals are prevented from engaging in important natural behaviors such as roaming, burrowing and swimming. These conditions cause severe psychological distress and physical harm to the animals. Farmed foxes are usually killed by anal electrocution, and farmed minks are typically killed by gassing with carbon monoxide. Beyond the cruelty, fur farms are damaging the environment and are also a breeding ground for COVID-19, with dozens of outbreaks on fur farms globally.

While BC recently made history by banning mink fur farming, it still allows the fur farming of fox and other animals. The rest of Canada has yet to act entirely.

Now, we have a chance to end factory fur farms across Canada.

Dear Decision Maker,

I’m writing today to ask you to show leadership and compassion by banning fur farming just as more than a dozen governments across Europe have already done, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium. 

For far too long, inherently inhumane factory fur farms have operated with impunity across Canada, keeping animals such as minks and foxes in small enclosures, preventing them from engaging in natural activities such as swimming, burrowing and roaming, thus causing extreme psychological distress. 

These animals are killed in an unacceptably cruel way – by anal electrocution or gassing with carbon monoxide. These practices have no place in society, both because they are inhumane, and because they cause damage to the environment by leaching waste into our waterways. Furthermore, fur farms are a breeding ground for pandemics, and there have been many COVID-19 outbreaks at fur farms globally.

While BC recently made history by banning mink fur farming, it still allows the fur farming of fox and other animals. The rest of Canada has yet to act entirely.

Please, act now and ban all fur farming.
