End Canada’s role in the cruel elephant ivory trade

Every year, at least 20,000 African elephants are poisoned, shot or beaten to death for their ivory. Their tusks are hacked off and sold for profit, often through international crime syndicates. Hundreds of rhinoceroses are cruelly poached as well. The African elephant population has declined by 96% in the last century and multiple species of rhinoceros are critically endangered. If urgent measures are not taken, elephants in the wild may become extinct within a couple of decades.

In the recent Minister of Environment and Climate Change Mandate Letter, the government committed to ending elephant ivory and rhinoceros horn trade in Canada. Dear Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Guilbeault,

I am writing to support the Government of Canada’s recent commitment made in the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Mandate Letter to ending its trade in elephant ivory and rhinoceros horn. Elephant ivory and rhino horn trade directly facilitate the laundering of illegal ivory and horn from poached elephants and poached rhinos respectively, fuel species extinction and loss of biodiversity in Africa, and increase the risk of future pandemics. 
 
Every year, at least 20,000 elephants and hundreds of rhinos die at the hands of poachers in Africa. The African elephant population has declined 96% in the last century, and elephants are at risk of becoming extinct within a couple decades. Africa’s biodiversity is already threatened, and further loss of elephant populations will have devastating consequences, including exacerbating the potential spread of future pandemics. 
 
The African Elephant Coalition, representing 78% of African countries holding elephants, has called on the world community to shut down ivory markets. Canada’s top trading partners, including the United States, United Kingdom and China, have taken action in response.  
 
While Canada has already committed to ending trade in elephant ivory and rhinoceros horn, time is of the essence and these measures need to be urgently enacted. Allowing elephant ivory and rhino horn trade, including the import of elephant ivory and rhino horn from cruel trophy hunts, not only creates channels for laundering illegal elephant ivory and rhino horn, but also perpetuates the demise of African elephants, rhinos, and biodiversity.  
 
As a nation that prides itself on conservation and biodiversity leadership, Canada must act. I am calling on you to help African nations protect elephants and rhinoceroses by ending Canada’s elephant ivory and rhinoceros horn trade as a matter of urgency.
