End wildlife killing contests in British Columbia!

Wildlife killing contests legally take place in British Columbia every year. During these contests, animals are senselessly killed to accumulate points towards winning cash and/or prizes. These animals are killed indiscriminately, without any regard for their suffering.

Allowing wildlife killing contests to continue is a clear rejection of the values held by the vast majority of British Columbians. Many U.S. states, including California and Washington, have already outlawed these shameful attacks on wildlife.

As a province that prides itself on its native wildlife, it is shocking that BC continues to allow these cruel and unscientific contests.

Dear Decision Maker, 

I am shocked that BC continues to allow wildlife killing contests. These cruel and unscientific contests do not help with wildlife management, encourage and normalize needless animal suffering, and do not represent the values held by the overwhelming majority of British Columbians. 

Wildlife killing contests promote a complete lack of respect for our native BC wildlife. These contests do not help with wildlife management, and scientists have repeatedly warned that these contests can disrupt stable breeding structures, creating further conflict and population imbalance. 

BC residents are largely opposed to the indiscriminate slaughter of wildlife for entertainment with 91 percent of residents opposing trophy hunting. Allowing wildlife killing contests to continue is a clear rejection of the values held by the vast majority of British Columbians.

Despite public disapproval and continued calls for an end to these shameful attacks on wildlife, the BC government has not taken any action and killing contests continue to happen across the province in 2022, with monetary awards being given to hunters for “accomplishments” such as harvesting the largest bear skull or killing the most animals in a season.  

With California and Washington already outlawing wildlife killing contests, and with Oregon in the process of doing so, BC stands increasingly alone on the West Coast in permitting these egregious killings to continue.

As a province that prides itself on its native wildlife and conservation leadership, British Columbia needs to end these cruel and unscientific attacks on wildlife. I am calling on you to act on the values of British Columbians and ban wildlife killing contests.
