The Crate Escape: Urge your MP to help mother pigs

Around 200,000 mother pigs are locked behind bars every year on British farms, suffering physically and mentally in farrowing crates—cages so small they cannot even turn around inside them. These intelligent and sensitive animals deserve better. It doesn’t have to be this way; around 40% of pigs on British farms are already crate-free, but we need the government to support farmers to make that 100%.

I was shocked to learn that right now, across the UK, thousands of mother pigs on British farms are confined in metal cages so small they cannot even turn around inside them. Farrowing crates are clearly extremely cruel and it should not be legal to treat these intelligent and sensitive animals in this way, which is why I back The Crate Escape: Humane Society International/UK’s campaign with other leading animal protection organisations calling for a UK ban on farrowing crates.

Several countries including Switzerland, Norway and Sweden have already banned farrowing crates and I am ashamed that the UK is lagging behind. Many British farmers have already stopped using these cruel cages but a blanket ban is needed to stop this suffering for good.

Less than one in five people support the use of farrowing crates in the UK. Please will you represent my concerns in Parliament and ask the Defra Secretary of State to begin the process of banning this inhumane and outdated practice?
