Tell the Canadian parliament you support legislation to ban animal testing for cosmetics!

After a decade-long campaign by HSI/Canada and our coalition of animal protection and cosmetics industry partners, the Canadian government has introduced groundbreaking legislation that will outlaw the use of animals to test cosmetic products or their ingredients in Canada. The legislation will also prohibit selling cosmetics that rely on new animal testing data to establish the product’s safety, as well as false or misleading “cruelty-free” claims.

HSI’s campaign has helped give the global beauty sector a cruelty-free makeover, and we’re now up to an incredible 43 national bans or restrictions on animal testing for cosmetics.

I am writing today to urge you to support the measures in the Budget Implementation Act to ban cosmetic animal testing and trade in Canada.

These amendments of the Food and Drugs Act would prohibit animal testing for cosmetics in Canada, the sale of cosmetics that rely on new animal testing data to establish the product’s safety, as well as false or misleading labelling pertaining to the testing of cosmetics on animals. This measure would bring Canada into line with the 43 countries that have already introduced similar bans or restrictions, including the United Kingdom, European Union, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Israel, India, South Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and most recently, Brazil. In addition, 10 U.S. states have also enacted bans, and further federal measures are in development in the U.S., Chile, South Africa, and elsewhere.  

This is a bi-partisan issue that has seen monumental support from all federal parties over the past decade. Further, the Canadian cosmetics industry is united with HSI and other animal protection advocates in supporting this critical legislation. An overwhelming 87% of Canadians also support a nation-wide ban on animal testing for cosmetics according to polling conducted in 2019 by Insights West.   

With Canada hosting the 12th World Congress on Alternatives this August, Canada has an historic opportunity to show it is among the global leaders in science, innovation and animal welfare.
