Please urge the Prime Minister to deliver the Action Plan for Animal Welfare in full

The Government said it believed in ‘care, respect and protection’ for animals, but after two whole years it has only delivered around a quarter of the Action Plan for Animal Welfare. Animals deserve better than broken promises!

Please let the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, know that we expect him to take animal welfare seriously, and deliver Action for Animals now!

Dear Prime Minister, 
 

Your government’s Action Plan for Animal Welfare said you would ensure that the UK offers animals ‘the care, respect and protection they deserve’. It committed to a lot of law and policy changes that would better protect millions of animals, including animals here in the UK and those suffering overseas.  

I am extremely disappointed to hear that so little of this plan has been delivered, and that your government is not treating animal protection as the priority that I and so many other british people expect.  

It appears that so many of your commitments to stop suffering have been abandoned, and the voiceless animals who rely on us for protection have been hung out to dry. 

I cannot imagine a good reason why the Kept Animals Bill, which will deliver on your manifesto commitment to ban live exports, amongst other things, has been waiting almost a year and a half to be given the time in Parliament it needs to become law.  

The government undertook a Call for Evidence on the UK fur trade in 2021, to inform potential action including a ban on imports and sales and I fail to understand why, almost two years on, Defra has still not published the results and says it has ‘no plans currently to make changes’ to expand existing legislation on fur. 

We cannot call ourselves a nation of animal lovers if our government’s commitments to improve animal welfare are only in words, not actions. Please show that you take animal welfare seriously, starting by prioritizing time for the Kept Animals Bill, and publishing the results of the Call for Evidence on the UK fur trade as a step towards a Fur Free Britain.
