Help Canada save elephants and rhinos from poaching and trophy hunting!

Every year, up to 25,000 elephants and 1,300 rhinos die at the hands of poachers in Africa, and thousands more are killed by trophy hunters. Elephants and rhinoceros could be extinct within our lifetimes if urgent action is not taken to save them.

Canada is on the verge of enacting some of the strongest trade-related protections for elephants and rhinos in the world. The proposed regulations would ban elephant ivory and rhino horn trade in Canada, along with imports of hunting trophies made from these parts.

Now, the proposed regulations must pass through a final stage of approval before being enacted. Canada is seeking widespread public support for the proposed regulations to help get these critical protections for elephants and rhinos over the finish line.

HSI/Canada and the undersigned individuals strongly support the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change’s proposed regulations, as published in Gazette I, to end trade in elephant ivory and rhinoceros horn in Canada as well as the import of elephant and rhino hunting trophies made from these animals.

Every year, up to 25,000 elephants and 1,300 rhinos die at the hands of poachers in Africa. Elephants and rhinoceros could be extinct within our lifetimes if urgent action is not taken to save them. Accordingly, there is urgent need for Canada to enact the strongest measures possible to protect elephants and rhinos and uphold its commitment outlined in the 2021 Minister of Environment and Climate Change Mandate Letter to “curb illegal wildlife trade and end elephant and rhinoceros tusk trade in Canada.”

The proposed regulations are ground-breaking and would set the global standard for elephant and rhino protection in non-range states. Critically, the regulations align with the directives of the foremost elephant and rhino conservation experts and stakeholders; The African Elephant Coalition (representing 78% of African countries inhabited by elephants), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature have all called for the closure of domestic ivory markets.

The proposed regulations represent the values of Canadians, 94% of whom support an elephant ivory trade ban, and will further establish Canada’s legacy as a global leader in biodiversity and wildlife protection. We commend you for taking timely action and playing an important role in preserving elephant and rhinoceros populations for generations to come.
