Write to the PM to table the Animal Welfare Bill

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, independent India’s first legislation for the prevention of animal cruelty, extended protection to domestic and captive animals and prescribed punishments against cruelty that took place. Unfortunately, in the intervening decades, over 64 years have passed, and there has been no meaningful amendment to the act to keep up with the times. All while our media channels are filled with reports of unimaginable brutality.

A new draft bill was circulated in 2021, but despite support from over 140 Members of Parliament and a majority of the public, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Bill is still pending. We will continue to work with the authorities, post elections, to ask for stronger laws against animal cruelty.
