Urge Viet Nam to ban the dog and cat meat trades

Every year, millions of dogs and cats, including many stolen pets, are trafficked throughout Viet Nam to supply markets, slaughterhouses and restaurants. Investigations reveal the immense suffering these animals endure as they are tightly crammed into cages during journeys that sometimes last for days. Many are sick and injured from rough handling. For those who survive the horrific journey, a brutal end awaits. They watch as others are slaughtered at a market, restaurant or slaughterhouse.

Not only is this cruel, it is dangerous since the dog meat trade poses a risk to human health, including the threat of rabies. Following surging cases of human rabies deaths in Viet Nam in 2024, the Deputy Prime Minister signed a Directive on strictly implementing rabies prevention and control. Now is the time to put the pressure on.

Dogs are loving and loyal companions who deserve compassion and protection. We’re committed to ending the dog meat trade by exposing the cruelty, rescuing those we can, raising vital public and political awareness, and supporting a phase out of the trade for good.

Dear Leaders of Viet Nam,

I stand with the millions of people from Viet Nam and around the world to urge you to pass explicit legislation to ban the inherently cruel and dangerous dog and cat meat trades that threaten public health and safety, and tarnish Viet Nam’s global reputation.
 
Every year, millions of dogs and cats—including many stolen pets—are trafficked throughout Viet Nam to supply markets, slaughterhouses and restaurants. Nationwide investigations have revealed the immense suffering caused to these animals, including crude and brutal methods of capture, transport and slaughter. The dog meat trade also poses a risk to human health, including the transmission of deadly rabies.
 
Around the world, dogs and cats are our loving and loyal companions. Dogs also dutifully assist us as therapists in hospitals and schools, as guides and assistants to people living with disabilities or life-threatening conditions and also serve with our armed forces and police to protect us. The dog meat trade is the ultimate betrayal of this special relationship.
 
Pet ownership is rising rapidly in Viet Nam and with that comes a responsibility to provide adequate legislation to protect animals from cruelty and exploitation, and to protect pet owners from having their beloved companions stolen by unscrupulous traders.
 
An ever-growing number of cities, provinces, territories and countries throughout the region have already taken steps to eradicate and ban these trades on grounds of animal welfare, public health and safety. Please take urgent action to end the dog and cat meat trades, to safeguard animal welfare and the nation’s health, and align with global public and political sentiment.
