Hold the new government to their promise to end animal cruelty!

Following the 2024 General Election, the Labour Party has formed the new UK government.

In the run up to 4th July, our Crackdown on Cruelty campaign inspired tens of thousands of animal loving voters to email candidates to urge them to make pledges on ten key issues affecting the lives of billions of animals. Together, we sent a clear message that animals matter at the ballot box.

Now it’s up to all of us to hold the new Labour government to the commitments they made on the campaign trail to introduce the biggest animal welfare boost in a generation and to end animal cruelty.

Help us encourage the new Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to act quickly to deliver on his promises to protect animals.

Dear Secretary of State,

I am writing to congratulate you on your appointment as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and to ask you to share your plans to deliver on the Labour Party’s commitment to crackdown on animal cruelty.

Alongside thousands of other animal loving voters, I recently wrote to my election candidates urging them to pledge to protect animals. I was therefore encouraged by your statement that the Labour Party will end animal cruelty and your progressive animal protection manifesto commitments.

There is, unfortunately, a lot of work to be done. Government efforts to protect animals have typically been piecemeal rather than strategic, thereby limiting their impact on animal welfare. The Conservative government recognised this and produced an Action Plan for Animal Welfare, although most of its commitments have gone unfulfilled.

I’m therefore writing to request that you task your new department with the creation of an Animal Welfare Strategy setting out your plans and priorities to achieve your ambition to introduce the biggest boost in animal welfare in a generation. Within this plan, I believe there should be some top priorities, namely:

•	A government bill to ban hunting trophy imports;
•	Government support for a bill to prevent the import and sale of fur;
•	An end to the use of farrowing crates for mother pigs.

Cruel hunting trophies, fur and crates for pigs have no place in modern Britain. I therefore hope that the Labour Party can deliver on its promises to take clear action to protect animals.
