Tell your newly elected MP to make animal welfare a priority!

The UK Parliament’s summer break is almost over, which means your newly elected MP will soon be heading back to Westminster. Now is the perfect time to tell your MP how much animal welfare matters to you!

The new Labour Government has made some encouraging commitments for animals. We must hold them to these commitments and push them to go further.

At HSI/UK, we are calling on the government to produce an Animal Protection Strategy, setting out their plans and priorities to stop suffering and tackle cruelty, including banning the import of hunting trophies and fur and ending the use of cruel farrowing crates for mother pigs.

You can help by urging your MP to take bold action for animals in Parliament, like backing our calls for a detailed and ambitious Animal Protection Strategy.

I am writing to congratulate you on your election victory and ask you to be my voice in Parliament for stronger animal protection laws.

In the run-up to the general election, I wrote urging you to #CrackdownOnCruelty if elected and to be a voice for animals in Parliament. Animal welfare is very important to me, and I hope you will treat it as a priority.

I was very disappointed that, while there were several animal welfare commitments in the Labour Party’s manifesto, no further protections for animals were announced in the recent King’s Speech. 

Now that the summer Parliamentary recess is nearly over, I urge you to lend your public support to improving animal welfare, including backing the following priority campaigns:

•	A Fur-Free Britain: Although fur farming is banned across the UK, we are still helping to prop up the global fur trade. Please urge the Labour Government to take swift action to stop this double standard of importing cruelty and end the fur trade in Britain.

•	A ban on hunting trophy imports: Every year British hunters travel overseas to kill endangered animals—including lions, elephants and leopards—and then bring their body parts home as sick souvenirs. Trophy hunters cause terrible suffering and are robbing communities and ecosystems of irreplaceable wildlife. Please call on the government to honour its manifesto commitment to ban the import of hunting trophies, by swiftly introducing a government bill.

•	The Crate Escape: In the UK, some 200,000 mother pigs are kept in cruel farrowing crates so small they cannot even turn around, for almost a quarter of their lives. Please urge the government to consult on the best way to support farmers to stop using cruel crates, and please lend your support to The Crate Escape campaign for a ban on the use of farrowing crates for mother pigs.

There are many other opportunities to improve the lives of animals and tackle cruelty and suffering. I would like to see the government publish a detailed and ambitious Animal Protection Strategy, setting out how it will deliver on its commitment to introduce the biggest boost to animal welfare in a generation. I would appreciate it if you could urge the government to produce such a plan and request that you do all that you can in Parliament to be a voice for animals who cannot protect themselves.
