End animal sacrifice at Nepal's Gadhimai festival
Every five years, the world’s largest animal sacrifice takes place at the Gadhimai Temple in Nepal, and it’s scheduled to begin December 8. Here, after days without food and water, and a grueling experience of transport, water buffaloes, goats, chickens, pigs, pigeons, ducks and rats are decapitated with blunt metal tools.
In years past, we worked closely with the Temple Trust, and local religious and spiritual leaders after which the Temple Trust pledged an animal sacrifice ban, but in 2019 when the sacrifice of thousands of animals began, the Temple fell silent and refused to act despite the Supreme Court of Nepal and several government ministries speaking out in favor of ending the slaughter.
Help us call for an end to the blood sacrifice at Gadhimai. Pressure is needed NOW to urge the government of Nepal to ban this cruelty before the next festival in December.
