Les animaux et le public méritent des étiquettes alimentaires équitables!
Jusqu'au 28 octobre, le gouvernement canadien organise une consultation publique sur l'étiquetage et l'emballage des œufs afin de ne pas induire les consommateurs et les consommatrices en erreur. Bien que l'accent soit mis sur les œufs d'origine végétale, c'est l'occasion de réclamer un étiquetage équitable pour TOUS les produits à base d'œufs, en particulier les œufs de poule.
L'industrie canadienne des œufs élève environ 27 millions de poules. La plupart de ces animaux doux et curieux sont contraints de passer toute leur vie dans de petites cages métalliques qui limitent considérablement leurs mouvements. Les boîtes d'œufs ne sont pas tenues de divulguer ce traitement cruel et sont autorisées à utiliser des mots et des images trompeurs qui donnent la fausse impression que les poules mènent une vie heureuse. Plusieurs enquêtes montrent que la majorité des Canadiens et des Canadiennes sont induits en erreur par les étiquettes typiques des boîtes à œufs, et paient souvent plus cher pour des œufs qui semblent meilleurs pour les animaux mais qui, en réalité, ne le sont pas.
