End animal sacrifice at Nepal's Gadhimai festival
Every five years, the world’s largest animal sacrifice takes place at the Gadhimai Temple in Nepal. Here, water buffalo, goats, chickens, pigs, pigeons, ducks and rats are decapitated with blunt metal tools.
In 2015, the Temple Trust pledged an animal sacrifice ban, but in 2019 when the sacrifice of thousands of animals began, the Temple fell silent and refused to act despite the Supreme Court of Nepal and several government ministries speaking out in favor of ending the slaughter. Pressure is needed to urge the Nepal government to ban animal sacrifice before the next Gadhimai festival in 2024.
